Fiona and Ruby

Congratulations to Fiona and Ruby what a remarkable year they've had. And to top it all they're just back from Manchester where they took part in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award 2023 - what an experience!  Ruby became a finalist when she won Scotland's BBC Unsung Hero sports personality of the year award earlier this month.

Fiona is Ruby's permanent foster carer and has been behind her all the way. She's given Ruby the opportunities to try out a variety of sports and activities and help her to discover what she can do rather than what she can't.

Fiona says: "Ruby came to live with me when she was five years old. Over the last 12 years she has blossomed into the wonderful, happy, loving, and talented girl she is today!  She didn’t have a great start in life and was diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome which has given her learning difficulties. But from the beginning I've been determined to support her to do her best.  We’ve been focusing on what she can do rather than what she can’t.  She’s so enthusiastic and willing to try hard. This is what’s helped her become a very good athlete and an outstanding volunteer. The list of Ruby’s successes is long and she has a couple of firsts to be proud of – first prefect at her school with a disability and first pupil with a disability to achieve a Duke of Edinburgh award.  And this year to top it all, she won the Fife Voluntary Action Active Volunteer award, The Forth 1 Local Hero Award and is Scotland’s winner of the BBC’s Unsung Hero sports personality of the year award. I could not be more proud."
